By Monday morning, nearly 210,500 income declarations submitted to VID

As of Monday morning, the State Revenue Service (VID) reported the submission of about 210,500 income declarations, indicating a significant response on the first day of filing.

Baiba Šmite-Roķe, the director of the State Revenue Service (VID), reported in an interview that typically about one million income declarations are submitted annually in Latvia. On the first day of the declaration submission period, the number of submissions reached approximately one-fifth of the total expected for the year. This trend suggests a strong initial engagement by taxpayers in fulfilling their income reporting obligations.

The electronic declaration system (EDS) was stable throughout the day, despite reports of initial slowdowns in the first half-hour of submissions. Some users interpreted this as a system failure, but Šmite-Roķe clarified that these delays were not indicative of a breakdown. She noted an unusual pattern of some users intentionally engaging in illogical actions within the system, possibly for amusement or to test the system's limits, which caused further delays for others attempting to submit their declarations.

Šmite-Roķe observed a gradual decline in the number of declarations submitted on March 1st over the years, with decreases of about 5% to 7% annually. While this could suggest changing user behaviors, she indicated that the VID continues to adapt its systems and processes to ensure efficient service for taxpayers as they navigate their annual income declaration requirements.
