On the first day of income declaration submissions, approximately 202,000 declarations were filed in Latvia, despite initial slowdowns in the electronic system due to high traffic.
In Latvia, the first day of income declaration submissions saw approximately 202,000 declarations being submitted to the tax authorities. Usually, around one million income declarations are filed annually, meaning that the first day's submissions accounted for about one-fifth of the expected total for the year. The electronic declaration system operated steadily throughout the day, although there was some initial lag during the first half-hour of submissions. This was misinterpreted by some users as a system crash, despite it being a temporary slowdown due to the high volume of traffic.
An official, Šmite-Roķe, noted that some individuals engaged in unusual activities during the submission process, possibly out of amusement or to test the system's robustness. These actions resulted in prolonged submission times, which hindered the connectivity for other users trying to submit their declarations. Despite this, Šmite-Roķe explained that there has been a gradual decrease in the number of declarations submitted on March 1st each year, a decline of about 5-7%, but she characterized this as a minor shift that does not signify a trend away from filing altogether.
The overall trend suggests that Latvians are still keen to comply with their tax obligations, as the number of submissions on the first day remains significant. The administration's efforts towards ensuring a reliable electronic filing system appear to have yielded positive results, fostering a willingness among the populace to continue engaging with the digital platform for their tax submissions.
