Head of VUGD: This has been a tragic winter

This winter in Latvia has been tragic due to a high number of fatalities in fires, as stated by the head of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

In an interview with Latvijas Radio, MārtiΕ†Ε‘ Baltmanis, the head of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), reported that Latvia experienced a tragic winter with a significant rise in fire-related fatalities. During the first two months of this year, 25 people died in fires, a stark contrast to only nine fatalities reported in the same period last year. This alarming increase highlights serious concerns regarding fire safety and prevention in the region.

Baltmanis noted that while the overall number of fires has not drastically increased, the ones that did occur have been particularly destructive. He highlighted that many of these fires have originated from heating appliances, which indicates a pressing need for public awareness regarding the safe use of such devices during the colder months. The data indicates that there has also been a notable increase in the number of rescues, with 124 individuals saved in January and February, compared to just 27 last year, showing that emergency services are responding effectively to emergencies.

This situation underscores the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures in Latvia. It may prompt authorities to reevaluate existing regulations on heating systems and to strengthen community outreach efforts to educate the public about fire hazards. Such steps could potentially reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future and improve overall safety in homes during the winter months.
