VUGD Ready to Rescue and Evacuate People Due to Floods Caused by Melting Snow
Latvia's State Fire and Rescue Service is prepared to respond to potential flooding caused by unusually thick snow and ice this spring.
The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) in Latvia is alerting citizens about the increased risks of flooding this spring due to thicker than normal snow and ice coverage. According to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, the maximum water levels in rivers are expected to exceed historical averages, raising the possibility of flooding in vulnerable areas. The increased thickness of ice is concerning, as it may lead to ice jams which could exacerbate flooding by restricting water flow in certain river sections.
Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Baltmanis, indicated that the first areas expected to experience flooding are in Kurzeme, particularly along the VentΔ and BΔrta rivers, followed by the Lielupe and Gauja rivers, with the Daugava expected to be last in line. Thereβs also a risk of flooding around lakes and low-lying meadows as water levels rise. As part of their response strategy, VUGD is set to issue warnings to residents in high-risk zones to prepare for possible evacuations and aid in any rescues needed.
This is particularly concerning as the spring flood period has been forecasted from March 5th to April 15th, during which the combination of thick snow cover and ice poses unprecedented risks. Residents are advised to stay informed about the potential flooding and to take necessary precautions to safeguard their homes and families. The proactive measures being put in place by VUGD highlight the importance of preparedness and community awareness in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters.
