On the first day, one-fifth of income declarations submitted

On the first day of income declaration submissions in Latvia, the electronic filing system experienced minor slowdowns, but overall performance was stable.

Latvia's income tax declaration season began on March 1, with approximately one-fifth of declarations submitted on the first day. The head of the State Revenue Service, Šmite-Roķe, indicated that the electronic declaration system (EDS) functioned reliably throughout the day, although there were reports of initial slowdowns attributed to user activity rather than a system failure. Some individuals were believed to be deliberately engaging in nonsensical actions within the system, perhaps for entertainment or to test its efficiency, which delayed others from accessing the platform.

Šmite-Roķe noted a trend over the years showing a 5-7% decrease in the number of declarations submitted on the first day each March, a decline she considers insignificant. Nevertheless, there remains a strong desire among taxpayers to submit their income declarations on March 1st, signaling a preference for early compliance. The State Revenue Service director also reassured taxpayers that they would have three additional years to submit their declarations for the 2025 tax year, reflecting an understanding of the public's schedule and potential concerns.

The continued interest in timely submissions suggests that Latvian citizens maintain a proactive attitude toward fulfilling tax obligations, despite the challenges presented by the electronic system and its occasional inefficiencies. The revenue service's efforts to maintain stability during peak submission periods underscores the importance of reliable digital infrastructure in facilitating tax compliance and public trust in government services.
