Rapes fall 24.5% in Alto Tietê in January, reports SSP

The number of registered rapes in the Alto Tietê region decreased by 24.5% in January 2026 compared to January 2025, according to the state’s Public Security Secretariat.

In January 2026, reported rapes in the Alto Tietê region of Brazil saw a significant decline of 24.5% compared to the same month in the previous year. According to data from the State Secretary of Public Security (SSP), there were 40 recorded cases of rape this year, down from 53 cases in January 2025. This reduction is notable given the ongoing societal concerns regarding sexual crimes in Brazil. Among the 40 cases this year, a substantial portion, 27 incidents, were classified as 'rape of vulnerable' individuals, which accounted for 67.5% of the total cases. The term 'rape of vulnerable' is used when the crime is committed against minors under the age of 14 or against individuals who cannot provide consent. This statistic draws attention to the vulnerability of certain groups within the community, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and protective measures. Mogi das Cruzes was identified as the city with the highest incidence of reported rapes in the Alto Tietê area, recording 13 cases. Following Mogi das Cruzes, Itaquaquecetuba and Ferraz de Vasconcelos reported six cases each, while Arujá had five. The SSP also noted that other types of crimes, including homicides, experienced a decline in the region, moving from 19 incidents in January 2025 down to 14 in the same month in 2026, suggesting a broader trend of decreasing crime rates in the area.
