São Paulo registers a 9.2% reduction in rape and 26% in homicide in January

The city of São Paulo recorded a significant drop in rape and homicide cases in January, according to recent data from the Secretary of Public Security (SSP).

In January this year, São Paulo City reported a 9.2% decrease in rape cases compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the Secretary of Public Security (SSP). Overall registrations declined from 270 in 2025 to 245 in January 2026. Notably, there was a 20.6% reduction in non-vulnerable victim cases, which dropped from 87 to 69, while cases involving vulnerable victims, specifically minors or incapacitated individuals, saw a smaller decrease of 3.8%, from 183 to 176 cases.

The most significant declines were observed in the Greater São Paulo area, with a staggering 23.8% drop, translating to 204 incidents in January 2026 compared to 268 the previous year. The separate analyses show that ordinary rape cases decreased from 53 to 44, while rapes involving vulnerable victims fell by 25.5%, from 215 to 160 reports. This indicates a broader trend of diminishing violent crime rates within the region.

Overall, considering the entire state of São Paulo, these reductions in violent crime suggest a positive shift toward better public safety, reflecting increased efforts in law enforcement and potentially preventative measures. These statistics may also indicate a growing awareness among the public about reporting such crimes, as well as the efficacy of various outreach programs by safety authorities. However, continued monitoring and action will be essential to maintain and further these trends, especially concerning vulnerable populations.
