Police lethality falls 11% in Alto Tietê in 2025; Itaquaquecetuba has the most deaths
Police-related deaths in the Alto Tietê region of Brazil decreased by 11% in 2025, with Itaquaquecetuba recording the highest number of fatalities.
In 2025, police-related deaths in the Alto Tietê region of São Paulo saw a significant decline of 11.11%, according to data from the Public Ministry of São Paulo. The report highlights that Itaquaquecetuba is particularly concerning as it accounted for 40% of these fatalities, indicating a worrying trend in police interventions within the city. In total, the region registered 27 incidents of police-related lethality, with the majority occurring during service hours of the police officers involved.
The statistics reveal that while police operations can lead to fatal outcomes, most incidents in Alto Tietê were linked to military police, who were on duty when the events occurred. Specifically, of the 27 recorded incidents, 26 were attributed to military police, with only one death resulting from the actions of a Municipal Guard officer who was off duty at the time. This suggests a potential focus on evaluating the conduct and accountability of military police forces, especially in areas like Itaquaquecetuba where fatalities are disproportionately high.
The Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo reassured the public that all occurrences of deaths resulting from police intervention are investigated thoroughly, signifying an attempt to maintain transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices. The continued monitoring and improvement of police lethality statistics could have significant implications for public trust, community safety, and the overall effectiveness of policing strategies in the region.
