Kobe University has announced the establishment of a new graduate program in data science starting in April 2027, aimed at fostering skilled professionals in data analysis. With the rise of artificial intelligence and the increasing importance of leveraging data to solve social issues, the university emphasizes the need for talent proficient in data science in an outburst of demand. This initiative is designed to respond to this need and enhance the university's educational offerings in this critical field.

The newly created major, titled 'Economic Mathematical Data Science,' will be offered within the Graduate School of Economics and will combine practical skills in programming and machine learning with a strong foundation in economics. It aims to interconnect various disciplines, including statistics and econometrics, to provide a comprehensive education. Furthermore, active data scientists from the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Group will be involved in delivering lectures and guidance, enriching the learning experience for students.

President Masato Fujisawa highlighted the necessity for advanced talent capable of understanding social structures deeply and utilizing data effectively for problem-solving and decision-making. In conjunction with this new program, an entrance exam modeled after science courses will be introduced in the 2028 academic year to prepare prospective students for this specialized major, which will have an intake of 30 students. This strategic move by Kobe University aligns with the ongoing transformation in education and workforce development in response to the growing significance of data-driven solutions in various sectors.
