Lithuanian fencer Dominikas Juras reached the top 12 in the men's category at the European Youth Fencing Championships.
Lithuanian fencer Dominikas Juras delivered a remarkable performance at the European Youth Fencing Championships, showcasing his talent in the men's rapier category. Starting from the 15th rank after winning four out of five bouts in the preliminary round, he secured a place in the knockout stage without competing in the first round. Juras advanced by defeating Romanian R. Popescu with a score of 15:11 and then, in a thrilling match, narrowly overcame Polish S. Gluszak 15:14 to secure his place among the top 16 fencers.
Despite his impressive run, the quest for a place in the top 8 did not go as planned for Juras. He faced a tough competitor in British fencer M. Belbouabo, who had the second-highest ranking in the competition, and ultimately lost the bout 6:15. Nonetheless, Juras made an impressive showing, finishing 12th among 92 of Europe’s finest young athletes, highlighting the strength and competitiveness of Lithuanian fencers on the European stage.
In the women's category, Beatričė Žilionytė also performed admirably, making it to the top 32 and finishing in 28th place out of 116 participants. She began her knockout round from the 46th position after winning four of her preliminary matches. Her victories included a decisive 15:7 win over Finnish fencer M. Jokiaho, followed by a close match where she triumphed over 19th-ranked French fencer C. Loue with a score of 14:12. Unfortunately, Žilionytė was defeated by Ukrainian Y. Gor in the round of 16 with a score of 5:15, but her performances contributed to a strong showing for Lithuania at the championship, showcasing the potential of its youth athletes.
