The São Paulo agricultural research sector has generated R$ 22.5 billion from R$ 1.15 billion invested in research, showcasing significant returns on investment and broad societal impact.

The seven units in São Paulo affiliated with Apta (São Paulo Agency of Agribusiness Technology) have invested R$ 1.15 billion in research, development, and innovation between 2022 and 2024. This substantial investment has reportedly generated a total return of R$ 22.5 billion, resulting in an impressive economic, social, and environmental benefit of R$ 19.5 for every R$ 1 invested in research. Such returns highlight the crucial role of scientific investment in enhancing agribusiness productivity and sustainability in the region.

The scientific programming undertaken by Apta encompasses a wide range of initiatives aimed at developing more productive and climate-resilient plant and animal genetic resources. Research also includes advancements in food processing to improve safety and nutrition levels. According to Apta, a remarkable 75% of the new technologies developed have contributed positively to social outcomes, while two-thirds have also addressed environmental issues, indicating a broad commitment to sustainable agribusiness practices.

The evaluation of these technologies is part of a social impact assessment, which examined 49 different innovations introduced during the period. This reinforces the importance of continuous investment in agricultural research and development as a means to not only spur economic growth but also enhance the welfare of society and maintain environmental integrity, underscoring the strategic role of public and private sectors in supporting agricultural innovation.
