Agriculture grew 11.7% in 2025 and was the sector with the greatest expansion in the economy
Brazil's agriculture sector experienced significant growth of 11.7% in 2025, leading economic expansion amidst lower growth in other sectors.
In 2025, Brazil's agriculture sector reported a remarkable growth rate of 11.7%, making it the best-performing sector of the economy, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This elevated performance was driven primarily by record harvests of soybeans and corn, alongside robust growth in livestock production. In contrast, industrial output rose only 1.4% and the services sector expanded by 1.8%, illustrating the agriculture sector’s significant role in the nation's economic landscape.
Despite its rapid growth, agriculture contributed just 7.1% to Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP), a stark comparison to the services sector’s dominant share of 69.5% and the industrial sector's 23.4%. The GDP figures from IBGE consider only the primary activities of agriculture, such as crop production and livestock farming, which diminishes the sector's apparent economic weight. However, when including related services, commerce, and industrial activities associated with agriculture, the overall contribution of this sector to the economy increases substantially.
This situation highlights the crucial, yet often undervalued, role of agriculture in helping to stimulate Brazil’s economy. Acknowledging and expanding the broader contributions of agriculture to the economy may encourage more comprehensive policies and support for agricultural innovation and related industries, ensuring sustained growth and economic resilience in the years to come.
