Joint Investigation Body Investigates Former Lawmaker Im Jong-sung in 'Unification Church Bribery Allegation'

Former Democratic Party lawmaker Im Jong-sung is being investigated by a joint investigation body regarding allegations of bribery involving the Unification Church.

A joint investigation team led by the Daejeon High Prosecutors' Office is conducting an investigation into former lawmaker Im Jong-sung for allegedly accepting bribes from the Unification Church. On the morning of the 24th, Im was summoned to the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, marking the second session of his questioning following an initial investigation on the 11th. Im has publicly stated that he denies any wrongdoing and emphasized that he has not committed any offenses, asserting that he has been engaged in legitimate diplomatic activities. While speaking to reporters before his questioning, Im addressed the multiple mentions of his name in a report intended for the Unification Church leader, named the 'True Mother' report, suggesting he had no knowledge of its contents. He urged the investigation team to seek answers from the report's authors. Subsequently, he also denied connections with former Unification Church leader Yoon Young-ho in light of phone forensic analysis, insisting that no evidence linking him to Yoon was found. Im is under scrutiny for allegedly receiving 30 million won from the Unification Church ahead of the 2020 general elections. The concerning report reveals that as of November 2017, there were indicated exchanges regarding the name change of the ‘World Peace Tunnel Foundation’, which was allegedly facilitated by Im’s assistance. This investigation raises pressing questions about political integrity and the influence of religious organizations on political affairs in South Korea.
