Colíder Hydroelectric Plant (MT) Moves from 'Alert' State to 'Attention' After Actions to Address Failures

The Colíder Hydroelectric Plant in Brazil has escalated its status from 'alert' to 'attention' as it prepares to refill its reservoir following structural safety concerns.

The Colíder Hydroelectric Plant located on the Teles Pires River in Itaúba, Brazil, has transitioned from a state of 'alert' to 'attention' as announced by its owner, Axia Energia, which was previously known as Eletrobras. This change in status comes as the plant prepares to begin refilling its reservoir starting Monday, October 23, amid concerns raised by the Public Ministry of the state of Mato Grosso (MP-MT) regarding significant structural failures in its drainage system. The MP-MT has even recommended the deactivation of the dam if alternative solutions are not implemented soon.

In response to the potential safety risks, Axia Energia has put into place a series of actions aimed at controlling the filling of the reservoir, limiting it to a maximum of 25 centimeters per day. This gradual filling strategy is intended to mitigate risks and prioritize the safety of local residents, the environment, and the infrastructure itself. Continuous monitoring of water quality and the surrounding flora and fauna is part of the plant's safety protocols during this process.

The notification reflects growing concerns regarding the structural integrity of hydroelectric plants in Brazil and highlights the balance between energy production and environmental safety. As the situation unfolds, it not only affects local ecosystems but also has implications for energy supply in the region, making it a significant issue for stakeholders involved in energy management and local community welfare.
