Colíder Hydroelectric Power Plant (MT) completes reservoir refill 6 months after MP points out flaws

The Colíder Hydroelectric Power Plant has completed the refilling of its reservoir, six months after structural flaws were identified by the Public Ministry of the state, leading to environmental damage.

The Colíder Hydroelectric Power Plant, located on the Teles Pires River in Itaúba, Brazil, has successfully refilled its reservoir to a height of 272 meters above sea level, returning to the levels seen in August of the previous year. This refilling comes six months after the state's Public Ministry (MPMT) alerted the facility to multiple structural flaws that had necessitated a reduction in water levels and caused various environmental damages. Following these issues, the MP recommended the dam's deactivation if no alternatives were feasible, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

In February, the hydroelectric plant had progressed from a state of 'alert' to 'attention' based on a safety improvement timeline it was adhering to. The refilling process was conducted cautiously, limiting increases to 25 centimeters daily while ensuring the safety of local residents, the environment, and the operation of the plant. This controlled and gradual refill aimed to mitigate any potential risk from the previous structural concerns, demonstrating a commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.

To oversee the refilling and associated safety measures, a team of 115 professionals was deployed, conducting thorough inspections on-site. These preventive actions signal the plant's response not only to regulatory pressure but also to public concerns regarding environmental protection and safety in the region, highlighting the delicate balance between energy production and ecological health.
