Civil Defense advises on the risk of sudden water rise after alert of intense rains in MT
Brazil's Civil Defense is warning swimmers to remain vigilant about the danger of sudden water rises following an intense rain alert for Mato Grosso.
The Civil Defense of Mato Grosso has issued a warning for swimmers to be cautious and not underestimate the signs of sudden water rise in rivers and waterfalls. This alert comes after the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) forecasted heavy rains in the region between Sunday and Monday. The expected storms may include lightning and wind gusts of up to 60 km/h, with rainfall rates varying between 20 to 30 millimeters per hour. Although the risks of power outages, falling branches, flooding, and electrical discharges are considered low, caution is advised.
Alongside the impending heavy rainfall, the Civil Defense highlighted the phenomenon known as "cabeça d’água", which translates to 'head of water'. This sudden increase in river levels can lead to severe accidents and potentially threaten the safety of those near water bodies. Therefore, the authorities are urging the public to stay informed about weather conditions and exercise extreme caution when engaging in activities near rivers or waterfalls, especially during such weather alerts.
The phenomenon of 'cabeça d’água' can pose significant risks for individuals enjoying water-related activities, particularly in areas susceptible to sudden changes in water levels. As Mato Grosso prepares for intense rainfall, it becomes imperative for the community to heed the warnings of the Civil Defense and be aware of the potential dangers that heavy rain could bring to their local environments and safety.
