Court orders emergency measures for the safety of the Lages Dam in Porteirinha
A Brazilian court has ordered emergency measures to be implemented by Codevasf to ensure the safety of the Lages Dam following its partial collapse and the evacuation of residents.
The Federal Court in Brazil has mandated that the Companhia de Desenvolvimento dos Vales do SΓ£o Francisco e do ParnaΓba (Codevasf) take urgent measures to guarantee the safety of the Lages Dam, located in Porteirinha, Northern Minas Gerais. This decision comes in light of the partial collapse of the dam earlier this month, which led to the preventive evacuation of 114 residents, including 77 individuals from the most critical area and 37 from the surrounding zones considered at risk. The official notification was released by the Government of Minas on Thursday, the 19th.
The court's action was prompted by the imminent risk of overtopping or complete rupture of the dam structure, potentially leading to severe consequences for nearby residents and the environment. The State Attorney General's office acted swiftly by proposing a Precautionary Action with an urgent request for the immediate implementation of preventive, stabilizing, and mitigation measures by Codevasf. They emphasized the necessity for proper support and care for the affected population as a critical part of the response strategy.
The Lages Dam incident highlights significant concerns regarding the safety and monitoring of dams in Brazil, particularly in regions vulnerable to natural disasters and structural failure. This situation not only impacts the local communities directly involved but also sets a precedent for dam safety regulations and the responsibilities of government and private entities in ensuring public safety and environmental protection.
