FCT Poll: INEC officials arrive late, voting begins in Durumi I
The Independent National Electoral Commission officials arrived late at the Durumi I Polling Unit during the Abuja Municipal Area Council election, delaying the start of voting.
During the Federal Capital Territory Area Council election, officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) arrived at the Durumi I Polling Unit later than expected, which caused a delay in the commencement of voting. The officials did not reach the polling site until around 11 a.m., even though a significant number of voters had already been waiting to cast their ballots. Despite the late start, voting began shortly after their arrival, but the delay raised concerns among the local community.
Yohanna Ishaku, the Village Head of Durumi I, voiced his dissatisfaction over the delay, indicating that it was unfair to voters who had arrived on time. Ishaku expressed hope that the officials would not prematurely close the polling station by 2:30 p.m. without allowing all voters to participate. This sentiment reflects a larger concern among residents regarding the electoral process and the logistical challenges faced on voting days, which can impact voter turnout and the fairness of elections.
On a more positive note, Nkechi Chime, the polling agent for the Social Democratic Party, reported that, despite the late arrival of INEC officials, the voting process itself was satisfactory. This suggests that while logistical issues are a concern, the integrity of the voting procedure was upheld once it commenced. Such feedback is vital for ensuring that future elections improve in terms of timing and organization, and it highlights the need for better planning by electoral officials in Nigeria.
