Amazon police operation targets 'political nucleus' of Comando Vermelho in the state
An operation by the Civil Police of Amazonas aims to dismantle a so-called 'political nucleus' of the Comando Vermelho gang in Brazil.
On Friday, the Civil Police of Amazonas launched an operation focused on dismantling a supposed 'political nucleus' associated with the Comando Vermelho (CV) criminal organization within the state. The ongoing investigation suggests that the gang has built significant influence, extending its reach into the local Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary branches, with connections across various states in Brazil. This highlights a concerning intersection of organized crime and political power, indicating the sophisticated nature of the CV's operations.
The operation involves 23 arrest warrants and 24 search and seizure orders, executed not only in Amazonas but also in six other states, including Pará, Minas Gerais, Ceará, Piauí, and Maranhão. So far, 14 individuals have reportedly been apprehended; eight arrests took place in Amazonas and six in other regions. The police action aims to dismantle networks associated with drug trafficking, money laundering, and corruption, underscoring the pervasive influence of criminal organizations in Brazilian society.
Among the individuals targeted by this police crackdown are notable figures, including a former chief of staff for the mayor of Manaus and a police officer, which indicates a deep-seated corruption problem involving public officials. As the investigation unfolds, the implications may resonate far beyond this operation, revealing the breadth of organized crime's infiltration into political structures and the challenges authorities face in combatting these issues at multiple governmental levels.
