Operation targets criminal organization of the Comando Vermelho with political nucleus in Amazonas
Police in Amazonas launched an operation against a criminal organization linked to the Comando Vermelho, arresting several individuals, including a public official alleged to have funneled money to the gang.
The Civil Police of Amazonas initiated an operation to dismantle a criminal scheme associated with the Comando Vermelho, a notorious drug trafficking group. The operation highlights the group's infiltration in local politics, where it allegedly maintained a 'political nucleus' that had access to various branches of the state government. As of the latest reports, eight suspects linked to this political layer have been arrested, signifying a serious breach of public trust.
Among those arrested is Anabela Cardoso Freitas, a member of the Auction Commission for the Manaus City Hall and a former chief of staff for the mayor. Investigations suggest she funneled approximately R$ 1.5 million to the criminal organization through shell companies. The situation reflects a troubling trend where organized crime has managed to set roots within governmental institutions, raising alarms about corruption and the integrity of public service in the region.
In total, the justice system has issued 23 preventive arrest warrants and 24 search and seizure orders, indicating a coordinated effort to uncover the full extent of the criminal network's resources and connections. This operation not only aims to disrupt the financial lifeline of the Comando Vermelho but also serves as a warning against corrupt practices that undermine the rule of law in Amazonas, potentially leading to further investigations in the future.
