Belarusian wanted by Interpol tried to remain calm like a Belgian: officials did not give him peace
A Belarusian national sought by Interpol attempted to remain calm while being apprehended by Lithuanian border officials at a border control point.
In a curious incident at the Medininkai border control point in Lithuania, border officials apprehended a Belarusian citizen who was wanted by Interpol. While traveling on a bus from Minsk to Kaunas, the 31-year-old man tried to maintain a calm demeanor, likening his restrained behavior to that of a Belgian. However, his efforts were in vain as Lithuanian border guards, part of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), had already identified him as the subject of an international search initiated by Danish authorities a month prior.
The VSAT officers were conducting routine checks on the bus’s passengers and their documentation when they discovered that one passenger, a Belarusian citizen, was the focus of an Interpol notice. The bus, operated under a Lithuanian license plate, was closely monitored by the border guards, and upon verification of passenger documents, they were able to identify the wanted individual. Following identification, the officials removed the man from the bus and took him into custody for further processing.
After his apprehension, the Belarusian national was placed in a temporary detention cell where he was continually monitored. This operation highlights the effective collaboration between Lithuania's border control and international law enforcement agencies, underscoring the importance of vigilance at border points to prevent wanted individuals from crossing into the country undetected. The enforcement of such measures is vital for maintaining regional security and ensuring that international rules regarding criminal activity are upheld.
