Belarusian detained in Poland on suspicion of espionage and in Lithuania

A Belarusian man has been detained in Poland on espionage charges related to Belarusian military intelligence and operations targeting NATO countries.

A Belarusian national, Pavel T., has been arrested in Poland on charges of espionage for the Belarusian military intelligence, with the detention occurring on February 9. Polish prosecutors have stated that he is accused of gathering intelligence regarding critical infrastructure components and other key sites relevant to Poland's defense and NATO operations, from June 2024 to February 2026. The situation has arisen amidst warnings from Warsaw about Russia and Belarus attempting to destabilize countries that support Ukraine amidst ongoing military tensions in the region.

Investigators revealed that Pavel T. was involved in reconnaissance activities across Poland, Germany, and Lithuania, focusing on strategic defense installations. His arrest was executed by the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) in coordination with the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and Lithuania's State Security Department (VSD). The court has imposed a three-month detention period on him while he faces potential imprisonment of at least five years if convicted, as evidence mounts against him in light of ongoing geopolitical instability.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has consistently accused both Russia and Belarus of undertaking diversionary and espionage operations in the region, indicating a broader threat to European security. This latest incident highlights the increased vigilance and cooperation among European intelligence agencies to combat espionage and protect crucial infrastructures against foreign threats, especially as nations bolster their defenses in light of the evolving security landscape linked to the Ukraine conflict.
