Border Guards Prevented an SUV from Being Driven into Belarus, for Which Interpol Issued a Search

Lithuanian border guards intercepted a stolen BMW SUV at the border with Belarus, which had been flagged by Interpol for theft.

On a Monday night, officers at the Triboniai border station in Lithuania's Varėna region stopped a BMW G5X SUV with German license plates as it was leaving Lithuania, operated by two men. During the check, border guards discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Germany a month earlier on January 14, prompting an international search through Interpol. Following the discovery, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) initiated a pre-trial investigation into the acquisition or sale of property obtained through criminal means, overseen by a prosecutor from the Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office. The accusations carry penalties that range from fines, community service, to imprisonment for up to six years, reflecting the severity of offenses related to stolen property. After being questioned, the suspects—a 39-year-old driver declaring residence in the United Kingdom and a 34-year-old passenger from Vilnius—were released but placed under intensive supervision due to the ongoing investigation. This incident highlights the active cooperation between law enforcement agencies across borders, demonstrating Lithuania's commitment to tackling international crime and protecting its borders from illicit activities.
