The government supports the new Sports Law project
The Latvian government has approved a new Sports Law project aimed at overhauling sports management and funding in response to significant changes in the sports sector over the past two decades.
On Tuesday, the Latvian government endorsed a new Sports Law project developed by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM). This project aims to implement a fresh sports management system and a new funding model. The current Sports Law has been in place since 2002, and despite various amendments, significant transformations in the sports sector necessitate a more comprehensive legal framework. The IZM emphasizes that the new regulation must ensure clearer governance, enhance transparency, and align with contemporary trends in sports development.
The new law aims to define the foundations for organizing and developing sports, enhancing the competencies of sports organizations, and clarifying the legal framework for the employment of athletes and sports staff. Key principles outlined in the proposed legislation include equality, fair play, safety, and good governance. Furthermore, the law also emphasizes the importance of sports in promoting public health and education, thereby playing a critical role in societal well-being.
By creating a renewed legal framework for sports, the Latvian government seeks to ensure that sports organizations can operate effectively and transparently while keeping pace with modern developments and public needs. This legislative change is seen as a crucial step in revitalizing the sports landscape in Latvia and addressing the challenges faced by the sector over the years.
