With a new law, hopes to modernize sports sector management and strengthen its funding
Latvia is set to replace its outdated Sports Law with a new regulation aimed at overhauling sports governance and funding.
Latvia is introducing a new Sports Law that will replace the current legislation in effect since 2002. The Ministry of Education and Science has indicated that the existing system no longer meets the developmental needs of the sports sector and public interests. The new law aims to establish a more effective, fair, and modern regulatory framework for all participants in the sports industry.
The primary objective of this legislative change is to improve the legal governance of the sports sector, creating a sustainable system that ensures transparent development going forward. Education and Science Minister Dace MelbΔrde highlighted that this new law will set clear rules for the playing field, facilitate thoughtful state funding investments in sports, reduce bureaucratic processes, and enhance transparency within the sector.
In light of its critical role in society, the government recognizes the importance of providing a supportive system for both elite athletes and the general public, promoting healthy and active lifestyles. This shift not only reflects governmental commitment to sports development but also aims to align with contemporary requirements for effective sports management in Latvia.
