This year, 500 thousand euros will be available for popular sports

The Latvian Ministry of Education and Science announced that additional funding for popular sports will enable more public sports events this year, aimed at increasing regular physical activity among residents.

The Latvian Ministry of Education and Science has revealed plans to allocate 500,000 euros for the promotion of popular sports this year, which is expected to help organize a greater number of significant public sports events. This initiative aligns with the objectives set forth in the Sports Policy Guidelines for 2022–2027, which aim to boost regular physical activity among residents, expand accessible sporting opportunities for all social groups, and enhance the understanding of the importance of movement in maintaining health.

Compared to past funding levels in 2025, the current allocation represents more than a doubling of financial resources dedicated to popular sports events. A significant portion of this funding, totaling 312,683 euros, will be reallocated from the budget of the Latvian Olympic Committee, where savings have been identified, thereby providing a more directed approach to support grassroots sports initiatives.

This additional funding will be distributed to various sports federations tasked with executing popular sports events. It is intended for 50 accredited federations, along with priority federations and specialized operating federations. The funds will also support student sports scholarships, promoting the development of dual-career pathways and increasing physical activity among youth, ultimately contributing to a healthier society.
