During a recent meeting, Edgars Pukinsks, advisor to the State Secretary for Sports and Youth Issues, presented details regarding the new Sports Law project, highlighting the necessity of its development. The project is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders and signifies considerable work from all parties involved. Many deputies expressed their support for the legislation, emphasizing the importance of creating a National Sports Fund that properly addresses funding concerns within the sports sector.

The proposed law includes legal regulations for the establishment of the National Sports Fund, designed to diversify sources of sports financing and attract private investments. It is also stated that the state budget funding for sports will be allocated according to the annual budget laws, with a priority emphasis on children’s and youth sports initiatives. This approach aims to ensure a balanced and supportive financial framework for sporting activities across Latvia.

Pukinsks further clarified that a new law will be drafted specifically for the National Sports Fund, as it was not possible to reference the fund in the current Sport Law project. The establishment of the National Sports Fund represents a significant step towards reforming sport financing in Latvia, thus aiming to boost the sporting landscape and ensure better resources for local athletes and sports programs.
