Double Hoy No Circula activated in Valle de Mexico due to environmental contingency

The environmental commission has activated a double 'Hoy No Circula' measure in Mexico City and nearby municipalities due to ongoing air quality concerns.

The Commission for Environmental Quality of the Megalopolis (CAMe) has maintained an environmental contingency in all 16 boroughs of Mexico City and 18 municipalities in the State of Mexico, leading to the implementation of a double 'Hoy No Circula' program. This initiative is focused on preventing, minimizing, and controlling pollutant emissions into the atmosphere across the Metropolitan Zone of Valle de Mexico (ZMVM).

The 'Hoy No Circula' program restricts vehicle circulation based on specific regulations to reduce air pollution. As reported, motorists who ignore these restrictions will face penalties ranging from 20 to 30 UMAs (Unit of Measurement and Update), which, as of 2026, corresponds to fines ranging from approximately 2,346.20 to 3,519.30 pesos, highlighting the economic impact of non-compliance during environmental emergencies.

As part of the environmental measures, specific vehicle types will not be allowed to circulate during the designated hours of 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, specifically targeting private cars in order to improve air quality in the region known for its high pollution levels. This ongoing effort showcases the government's commitment to addressing environmental issues in urban settings, likely impacting daily commuters and the transportation landscape in the densely populated valley area.
