Double Hoy No Circula on the way? Alerted for poor air quality in CDMX and Edomex this week
Environmental authorities are warning of poor air quality in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, possibly leading to a double Hoy No Circula contingency this week.
The Commission for the Environmental Protection of the Megalopolis (CAMe) has issued a warning regarding adverse conditions expected to impact air quality in Mexico City (CDMX) and the State of Mexico (Edomex) from February 9 to 15. The alert highlights concerning levels of ozone that could trigger an environmental contingency, particularly on days of elevated temperatures expected to contribute to atmospheric stability.
During the specified week, officials anticipate very poor air quality, significantly affecting residents' health and daily activities. The most critical days identified for a potential environmental contingency include February 10, 11, and 12, aligning with periods projected to experience the highest ozone concentrations, exacerbated by warm temperatures typical for this time of year.
If air quality conditions deteriorate as predicted, authorities may implement a double Hoy No Circula program, restricting vehicle circulation to mitigate pollution levels. This would serve dual purposes: to safeguard public health and to reduce traffic in a city already known for its air quality challenges. Public awareness and preparedness will be crucial to navigate the forthcoming week as residents may need to adjust travel plans accordingly.
