NSCDC moves to protect fibre-optic cables in Gombe
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Gombe has partnered with the state government to protect fibre-optic cables viewed as critical national infrastructure.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), specifically its Gombe State Command, is actively collaborating with the Gombe State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport to mitigate the destruction of fibre-optic cables throughout the region. During a recent meeting with Usman Kallamu, the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, NSCDC Commandant Jibrin Idris emphasized the importance of safeguarding these cables, stating that they are vital for national communications and economic progress. The initiative reflects a growing awareness regarding the necessity to protect critical information infrastructure.
In his address, Commandant Idris highlighted that fibre-optic cables are among the critical national assets essential for facilitating communication and supporting digital services. He noted that their protection is not merely optional; it is a legal responsibility of the NSCDC, signifying the government's commitment to ensuring technological stability and progress. This movement underscores the increasing emphasis on infrastructure security as well as its role in the economic framework of the state.
Furthermore, Idris warned that any destruction to these vital cables is not just a civil violation but also carries criminal consequences, reinforcing the seriousness of this matter. The partnership between the NSCDC and the Gombe State government marks a proactive step toward addressing threats to essential communication infrastructure, which is integral to the ongoing digital transformation and economic development in Nigeria.
