NSCDC warns contractors against damaging fibre-optic cables in Abuja
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has warned construction companies in Abuja against damaging underground fibre-optic cables, threatening prosecution for negligence.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a stern warning to construction companies and contractors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja to refrain from damaging underground fibre-optic cables during their excavation work. Commandant Olusola Odumosu emphasized that continuing damage to these vital telecommunications lines could lead to serious repercussions, including legal action against offending contractors. This warning comes amid increasing reports of negligence by contractors, who often fail to plan and identify the location of existing communication lines before beginning their projects.
The NSCDC's statement highlighted that repeated disruptions caused by contractors' actions have had significant knock-on effects, leading to issues like interruptions in internet service, banking operations, and other essential communications throughout the capital. These disruptions not only affect private businesses and individual users, but they also hinder government services and the functioning of commercial activities. Odumosu pointed out that such negligence reflects poorly on the contractors and can undermine public trust in their work.
The NSCDC's warning serves as a critical reminder of the importance of proper planning and due diligence in construction projects. As the infrastructure of Nigeria continues to develop, aligning construction practices with the needs of existing telecommunications networks is essential. Failing to do so can lead to costly damages and legal ramifications while also placing added strain on already strained infrastructures, further complicating the landscape for both service providers and users.
