NSCDC cautions on destruction of fibre optic cables in A’Ibom

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom has issued a warning regarding the destruction of fibre optic cables by miners and road construction companies. According to Commandant Geraldine Abetianbe, these cables are classified as critical national information infrastructure, and any damage to them, whether intentional or due to negligence, poses significant national security risks. Abetianbe emphasized that the destruction of telecommunications infrastructure is a serious offence that can have legal repercussions for those responsible.
In her statement, Abetianbe urged companies engaged in mining and road construction in the state to coordinate with relevant authorities before undertaking any digging, drilling, or construction activities. She highlighted that claiming ignorance about the location of fibre cables or other telecommunications installations would not exempt individuals or companies from legal accountability. The NSCDC is prepared to pursue immediate detention, investigation, and prosecution of offenders under existing laws, signaling the importance the government places on these critical infrastructures.
