Winter holidays in the South begin in brisk winter weather

Winter holidays in southern Finland commence with freezing temperatures, but the sun may appear in several areas.

In southern Finland, including the capital region, Pori, and Turku, winter holidays are starting under notably cold conditions, with nighttime temperatures dropping to around -20 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander from Yle notes that the wind chill makes it feel about five degrees colder, prompting recommendations for warm clothing and skin protection. As the day progresses, temperatures are expected to rise by about five degrees, although the coldest days will be Friday through Sunday morning.

In central and northern Finland, temperatures may plummet to -25 to -30 degrees Celsius at night, with Lapland experiencing even colder temperatures reaching -35 degrees. However, Lohtander suggests that the intense cold will ease slightly by early next week, with temperatures in southern and central regions expected to hover around -10 degrees or less. The first week of winter holidays will present variable cloud cover, but precipitation will remain minimal, allowing for some clear skies.

Furthermore, snowfall in southern Finland is currently around 30 centimeters, which is less than the usual amount. Variability in winter weather and the relative lack of snow are notable aspects of this winter's holiday season, emphasizing the potential discomfort brought on by the cold as families prepare for the winter break amidst these harsh conditions.
