Good news for those waiting for ski holidays: temperatures will rise and more snow will arrive
Cold weather continues, but temperatures are set to rise this weekend along with expected snowfall in southern Finland, enhancing ski conditions.
Finland is experiencing ongoing cold weather, although temperatures are expected to rise from severe lows this weekend. On Monday, daily temperatures in southern regions will reach between -5 to -8 degrees Celsius, while much colder conditions persist in central Finland and Lapland, where temperatures may drop significantly. Yle's meteorologist Elias Paakkanen notes that while the frost will continue, it will be less intense compared to previous days.
As the week progresses, snowfall is anticipated to become more widespread, particularly benefiting southern Finland with enough snow to prepare ski tracks in regions like Southern, Western, and Southwestern Finland. The forecast suggests that snow will accumulate over several days, particularly on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Paakkanen estimates that southern areas could see over twenty centimeters of additional snow by the weekend, which will enhance skiing conditions significantly.
However, there is a cautionary note regarding the timing of winter storms coinciding with the start of ski holidays. The potential for heavy snowfall could create dangerous driving conditions, especially during peak travel times, as people head out for skiing. This has implications for travel planning as visitors may need to prepare for challenging weather conditions when traversing to ski destinations in Finland.
