Winter holidays begin in excellent weather: frost is moderate and there is plenty of snow
The winter holiday season in Finland is starting with favorable outdoor conditions, featuring moderate frost and sufficient snowfall across the country.
The winter holiday season is set to commence in Finland on Monday, arriving with notably good outdoor conditions. According to Yle's meteorologist Anne Borgström, although the freezing temperatures are higher than average nationwide, the most extreme negative temperatures are expected to diminish. Nighttime temperatures are less severe, with significant daily fluctuations; for example, temperatures dropped below -30 degrees Celsius in Vihti overnight but are projected to rise to around -9 degrees Celsius during the day. This typical winter variability brings considerable changes in temperatures throughout the day.
In the coming week, weather conditions will alternate with varying cloud cover across Finland. For instance, cloudy nights can help maintain milder temperatures, while sunny days can increase warmth. Overall, Borgström notes that the weather will predominantly be dry across the country, with little precipitation expected, allowing people to enjoy outdoor activities without the disruption of snow or rain.
Additionally, the snow situation is reported to be favorable nationwide, with even the Åland Islands receiving a few centimeters of snow. This allows for skiing and tobogganing in most regions, encouraging outdoor recreational opportunities just as families prepare for the winter holiday season.
