The strongest snowfall of the winter is expected this weekend
A significant snowstorm is forecasted to hit Latvia over the weekend, anticipated to be the strongest this winter, with widespread heavy snowfall and potential travel disruptions.
Latvia is set to experience its most intense snowfall this winter as a significant snowstorm is predicted to hit the country on Friday and into Saturday. Meteorologists expect that a wide band of precipitation will sweep in from the southwest, bringing moderate to heavy snowfall across the nation. In the southeastern regions, rain and ice may also occur, with the heaviest snow expected to taper off by Saturday morning in eastern Latvia.
The snow accumulation is expected to be considerable, ranging from 10-25 centimeters across most of Latvia, with lesser amounts in the northwest and specific coastal areas. Wind gusts from the east and northeast are also expected to strengthen, reaching speeds of up to 20 meters per second, particularly along the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga. In the capital city, a light snow will start on Friday morning but will intensify throughout the day, easing into the night.
The anticipated heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions could result in some roads becoming impassable and railway tracks potentially being blocked by snow. With such weather conditions, authorities and the public are urged to prepare accordingly for travel disruptions and adverse conditions, especially during the peak of the storm on Friday and Saturday.
