A strong snowstorm is expected on Friday
Latvia is preparing for a strong snowstorm on Friday, with significant snowfall expected particularly in the southeast.
A significant snowstorm is forecasted for Latvia, particularly affecting the regions of Selija and Latgale. On Wednesday evening and into Thursday, these areas will experience prolonged snowfall, while the rest of Latvia will see minimal precipitation during the day. Temperatures in southern Latgale may rise to around zero degrees Celsius.
As winds from the east and northeast intensify on Friday, strong gusts will create blizzard-like conditions, with a substantial precipitation zone moving in from the southwest. This snow is expected to accumulate significantly, with anticipated snowfall amounts reaching between 10-20 centimeters by Saturday. In certain areas, especially in southeastern Latvia, rain and thawing conditions may also occur.
Wind speeds are projected to increase on Friday, with gusts reaching 10-15 meters per second, and up to 20 meters per second along the Kurzeme coast by the Gulf of Riga. Consequently, some rural roads may become impassable due to the blizzard conditions, particularly in the afternoon. Following the storm, temperatures will drop significantly, with nighttime lows potentially falling below -25 degrees Celsius.
