Heavy snow is expected on Friday

Latvia is set to experience a significant snowfall on Friday and into Saturday, according to meteorological forecasts.

Meteorologists have predicted a heavy snowstorm to hit Latvia beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday. Prior to this storm, areas in Selija and Latgale will experience prolonged snowfall on Wednesday evening through Thursday night, with no significant precipitation expected during the day on Thursday. The temperature in southern Latgale is expected to rise to zero degrees Celsius, signaling some potential for a slight thaw in certain areas before the storm's arrival.

On Friday, the east-northeast winds will intensify, contributing to poor visibility as the snow begins to drift. A widespread precipitation system will cross the country from the southwest, with light snow potentially developing into a strong snowstorm that may deposit between 10 to 20 centimeters of snow across many regions by Saturday. Additionally, some areas, particularly in southeastern Latvia, may also see rain and thawing conditions amidst the snowfall, complicating travel and local conditions.

Wind gusts are expected to increase to 10 to 15 meters per second, reaching up to 20 meters per second along the Kurzeme coastline by the Gulf of Riga. Starting Friday afternoon, some rural roads could become impassable due to the snowstorm, prompting warnings for residents to prepare for challenging travel conditions. A brief thaw is expected to affect only the southeastern part of the country before temperatures drop again on Sunday night, indicating a shift in weather patterns following the storm.
