Customs move to unlock N1.17tn onion exports

The Nigeria Customs Service is working to eliminate non-tariff barriers to boost onion exports, which are valued at N1.17 trillion.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced its commitment to supporting onion farmers and stakeholders involved in export trade by removing non-tariff barriers. This initiative aims to enhance the onion sector, which is currently valued at N1.17 trillion. During a recent courtesy visit by the Regional Observatory of Onion in West and Central Africa, NCS Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi reiterated the importance of creating a conducive environment for trade in onions.

Adeniyi emphasized the critical need to address operational bottlenecks that hinder onion exports and promised collaboration with relevant government agencies. This engagement comes at a crucial time, especially in light of the past six months where indirect challenges could have impacted the sector negatively. By working together with stakeholders, the NCS believes it can foster a thriving onion export market that benefits local farmers and boosts Nigeria's economy.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts by the Nigerian government to prioritize agricultural exports and improve trade relations within Africa. The statement from the Customs Service reflects a proactive approach to strengthen the onion sector and encourages stakeholders to support the proposed changes, which could lead to an increase in export volumes and revenue generation for the country.
