The Ogun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service seized contraband worth N1.35 billion in two months, marking a significant increase in revenue compared to last year.
The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reported significant success in its operations, with the seizure of contraband valued at approximately N1.35 billion between February and March. This figure includes two antiquities that underscore the command's commitment to protecting cultural heritage. Furthermore, during this period, the command generated revenue of N285.65 million, which reflects a dramatic increase of over 1,082% compared to the same timeframe last year, indicating a robust enhancement in enforcement activities and revenue collection.
Acting Area Controller Olukayode Afeni emphasized the importance of these actions, not only in terms of revenue but also in maintaining Nigeria's cultural integrity by recovering historical artifacts. During the briefing, Afeni highlighted that the improved figures were also associated with a notable rise in export activities, reporting the movement of 95 metric tons of goods worth over N305 million. This marks a remarkable recovery compared to the previous year, which had no exports recorded during the same months.
The seized antiquities will be handed over to the curator of the National Museum, reflecting the customs service's dedication to preserving Nigeria's rich history. These enforcement measures demonstrate a proactive approach in combating smuggling and enhancing legitimate trade, reinforcing the role of customs in national development and heritage management.
