Nigeria: Customs Vows to Surpass N9trn Target With Automation
The Nigeria Customs Service is aiming to exceed its revenue target of N9 trillion through the automation of licenses and permits.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced its ambitious plan to surpass a revenue target of N9 trillion for the fiscal year by enhancing its automation processes. By automating the licensing and permits system, the NCS intends to minimize human interaction and decrease processing times, which have historically hindered efficiency. This strategic move is also designed to streamline the application, management, and renewal processes for licenses and permits, making it easier for stakeholders to engage with the Customs Service.
The announcement was made at a sensitization event held in Lagos, aimed at informing freight forwarders and bonded terminal operators about the new automation initiatives. These stakeholders play a critical role in the customs operation, and their buy-in is essential for the successful implementation of these automated processes. By educating and enabling these key players, the NCS hopes to foster a collaborative environment that supports increased revenue collection and operational efficiency.
As of January 2026, the NCS reported a collection of N7.281 trillion, representing one of its most robust financial performances in recent times. To meet its ambitious target for the year 2026, which is approximately N1.72 trillion greater than 2025's collection, the NCS is taking proactive steps to enhance its revenue generation capabilities through technological innovation. This development not only positions the NCS to achieve its financial objectives but also signals a significant shift towards modernization within Nigeria's customs operations, potentially serving as a model for similar initiatives in other sectors of the economy.
