AVAX: A Breath Away from Completion of the Katechaki - Evangelismos Tunnel
One of the two tunnel boring machines constructing Athens Metro Line 4 is nearing its destination at the Evangelismos shaft.
The article discusses the significant progress on the Athens Metro Line 4, specifically highlighting the work of the tunnel boring machine named 'Athena', which has dug a remarkable 5.1 kilometers of tunnel from Katechaki. The machine is expected to break through at the Evangelismos shaft soon, marking a pivotal moment in the construction process. As it digs, Athena not only excavates but also pre-installs concrete rings every 1.5 meters, effectively constructing the tunnel as it progresses, which showcases advanced engineering techniques.
Currently, about 300 workers are tirelessly operating 24/7 to support this critical infrastructure project. They have successfully installed 3,393 concrete rings along the route that connects significant areas such as Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, and Kaisariani, indicating the project's substantial impact on improving public transport in Athens. This concerted effort aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity across the city, emphasizing the importance of modern transportation systems in urban development.
The completion of this tunnel is expected to bring significant benefits, not only in terms of transportation efficiency but also in reducing environmental impact due to decreased reliance on personal vehicles. As the project progresses, it represents a commitment to improving urban infrastructure and the quality of life for residents, showcasing AVAX's dedication to innovation in construction and engineering within Greece's rapidly evolving public transport landscape.
