The 'Athena' tunnel boring machine reached the Evangelismos shaft, having completed a 5.1-kilometer stretch for Athens' new Metro Line 4.

On Thursday morning, the 'Athena' tunnel boring machine, having started its journey from Katechaki, revealed its head at the Evangelismos shaft after successfully boring a 5.1-kilometer tunnel for the new Metro Line 4 in Athens. This section of the tunnel is located at the intersection of Vasilissis Konstantinou and Michalakopoulou streets. The advanced machine not only excavates but also constructs the tunnel by placing concrete segments every 1.5 meters it advances.

To date, working around the clock in shifts, the 'Athena' and its crew have installed 3,393 concrete segments along the route that stretches through Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, the University Campus, and Kaisariani. This extensive tunneling effort has resulted in the removal of over 400,000 cubic meters of earth, showcasing the scale and complexity of the project. This new line is expected to enhance public transportation in Athens significantly.

The twin tunnel boring machine, named 'Niki,' follows a reverse path to assist in the completion of the project. The development of Metro Line 4 is a significant investment in the infrastructure of Athens, and once completed, it will offer improved connectivity and efficiency in urban transit for its residents, making a considerable impact on the city's overall transportation landscape.
