Women group urges NDDC, NEDC to equip schools with laboratories

Women in Chemistry is urging Nigerian development agencies to improve science education by providing functional laboratories in schools.

Women in Chemistry (WIC) has called for urgent action from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to enhance educational outcomes by equipping schools with properly functioning science laboratories. The WIC highlights the alarming condition of laboratories in many Nigerian schools, attributing poor learning environments as a significant factor discouraging young girls from pursuing studies in the sciences, particularly Chemistry. This appeal emphasizes the need for better educational infrastructure to foster a conducive learning atmosphere for all students.

The remarks were made by the WIC Coordinator, Dr. Sarah Nwinee, during a recent event, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry 2026 Global Women’s Breakfast, which took place at the Petroleum Training Institute in Delta State. This annual event aims to bring attention to the contributions of women in the field of chemistry and advocate for improvements in science education globally. Dr. Nwinee's address underscored the critical state of science education in Nigeria, where inadequate laboratory facilities often lead to subpar learning experiences, particularly for female students.

The WIC’s initiative spotlights a broader educational challenge facing Nigeria—insufficient investment in science education infrastructure. By requesting the NDDC and NEDC's involvement, the organization hopes to influence policy changes and mobilize resources toward fulfilling the educational needs of schools in the Niger Delta and North East regions. This effort highlights the intersection of gender and education in science, advocating for both enhanced resources and a supportive environment where young girls can thrive in their scientific pursuits.
