Total Closure on the Old Serra of Tamoios Highway Exceeds 35 Hours in Northern Coast of SP

The Old Serra of the Tamoios Highway has been totally closed for over 35 hours due to landslides caused by heavy rain in Caraguatatuba, São Paulo.

The Old Serra of the Tamoios Highway, a vital road for accessing the Northern Coast of São Paulo, has been completely closed for more than 35 hours as of Tuesday morning, due to severe weather conditions. The road, which was blocked late Sunday evening after 8:45 PM, has experienced five landslides that involved both earth and rocks, leading to safety concerns for drivers. High rainfall in the region prompted this precautionary measure, and authorities have not yet provided an estimate for when the road will be reopened.

According to the Tamoios concessionaire, which manages the roadway, crews are continuously monitoring rainfall accumulation, soil conditions, and weather forecasts for the upcoming hours. In response to the closure of the Old Serra, traffic is being managed in a convoy operation, following a 'Stop & Go' scheme via the New Serra. This alternative route is temporarily allowing some vehicle movement, although it is not without its own challenges due to the ongoing bad weather.

Additionally, the Oswaldo Cruz road in Ubatuba was also closed due to a landslide at kilometer 81, highlighting the widespread impact of the heavy rains in the area. The cumulative effects of this severe weather have raised critical concerns about road safety and accessibility for residents and tourists alike, particularly those relying on these routes to access beach destinations in the region.
