A New Official Trail Will Be Established in Seoraksan After 50 Years from Goseong-gun to Ulsan Rock

The first official trail connecting Goseong-gun and Ulsan Rock in Seoraksan National Park is set to be established, marking the first such trail in 50 years.

An official hiking trail will soon be established in the Seoraksan region, specifically connecting Goseong-gun to Ulsan Rock, which is a significant landmark within the national park. Recently, the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment has announced this change in park planning, highlighting the creation of a new trail that spans a total of 4.3 km, encompassing both areas within and outside the national park. The planned completion date for the trail is projected for the first half of 2028, with significant investment in infrastructure including parking facilities, restrooms, and safety measures like decks and handrails. This initiative comes after years of advocacy from local residents and structures the first legal access point from Goseong-gun to Ulsan Rock since the park's designation as a national park 50 years ago. Prior to this, residents raised concerns about equity in access as neighboring regions, including Sokcho, Inje, and Yangyang had already established trails. Since 2017, local efforts to secure a legal trail have culminated in this announcement, and Goseong-gun has invested in feasibility studies to pave the way for this new trail. The Goseong County Mayor, Ham Myung-jun, emphasized the significance of this new path, which he believes will not only satisfy the long-standing desires of Goseong residents but also spur local economic development by dispersing tourist foot traffic and potentially cultivating new markets surrounding the trail. The local government aims to prioritize safety and environmental preservation as they work towards making this trail a new highlight for Seoraksan Mountain.
