The ‘Industrial Tower’ is moving to Ulsan Grand Park after 60 years... New design contest
Ulsan's iconic Industrial Tower is being relocated to Ulsan Grand Park, and a design contest for its new form is being announced.
The Industrial Tower, a symbol of Ulsan's industrialization, is being relocated to Ulsan Grand Park after 60 years in its original location. The Ulsan government announced that the tower will be moved from the rotary in Sinjeong-dong to a position near the lotus pond at the park, as part of urban development plans that include the construction of a tram line. Originally erected in 1967 to signify the establishment of the Ulsan Industrial Center and the success of the government’s economic development plans, the tower stands at 25 meters high, decorated with a globe and figures symbolizing labor and progress.
In the process of relocating the tower, the Ulsan government will also be demolishing the original concrete structure while temporarily moving certain components such as the globe and figures to the Ulsan Museum's outdoor exhibition space. The new design for the industrial tower will be determined through a public competition, emphasizing the maintenance of the original architectural elements while integrating them into the surrounding park environment. This design contest opens to citizens, organizations, and companies, encouraging creative proposals for the new structure, with prizes totaling 2 million won for the most compelling designs.
The shift of the Industrial Tower is not just a relocation but a reimagining of Ulsan’s historical and cultural identity as it continues to evolve. By inviting public input on the new design, the Ulsan government seeks to foster community engagement and enhance the aesthetic found within Ulsan Grand Park, which plays a key role in the city's urban landscape and visitors' experience. The new structure is set to become a central element of the park, reflecting Ulsan's heritage while welcoming its future growth.
