Seoul Forest Walking Path, Prohibiting Bicycle Traffic 'Pedestrian-Only' Promotion

Seoul City is planning to designate paths within Seoul Forest as pedestrian-only to enhance safety and prevent accidents caused by bicycles.

Seoul City has announced plans to designate pedestrian-only paths within Seoul Forest, located in the Seongdong District, which will prohibit bicycle traffic. This initiative aims to enhance safety for walkers, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, amidst increasing concerns over accidents caused by bicycles on these paths. Currently, there have been reports of accidents involving pedestrians due to reckless cycling, leading to this new regulation.

As per the Pedestrian Safety Law (보행안전법), individuals caught cycling on designated pedestrian paths will face a fine of 30,000 KRW. The city's decision reflects a more significant emphasis on pedestrian safety and comfort, highlighting the importance of the walking environment in urban areas. Authorities believe that allowing cyclists into pedestrian zones undermines the safety of individuals, particularly those who may need additional assistance or protection.

Seoul City will gather public opinions until the 18th and will finalize the regulation after a review meeting of significant documents. This community involvement ensures that local concerns are considered before the official implementation of the pedestrian-only policy. If implemented, this measure could set a precedent for other urban areas to improve pedestrian safety measures effectively.
