Foreign Tourists Hiking Bukaksan Say 'Wonderful Seoul'

Foreign tourists visiting Seoul are increasingly recognizing hiking as a must-do theme for their travel experience.

Foreign tourists visiting Seoul are increasingly identifying hiking as a must-do theme for their travel experience. On the 17th of last month, an event called 'Morning Yellow,' organized by the Seoul city and Seoul Tourism Foundation, attracted many foreigners. This hiking event took place in the Bukaksan area, with the foundation aiming to solidify the image of Seoul as a 'global hiking tourism city.' Among the participants from 17 countries, including the United States, France, and Egypt, 24 foreigners gathered to hike the 342m high Baegakmaru, sharing their experiences of winter hiking's unique charm.

The success of foreign tourists hiking easily in the unfamiliar city of Seoul can be attributed to several initiatives by the Seoul Tourism Foundation. They operate three hiking tourism centers (Bukhansan, Bukaksan, and Gwanaksan), providing hiking gear such as boots and jackets for rent to foreign hikers. These centers also serve as rest points. As a result of these initiatives, visitor numbers to the centers exceeded 100,000 last year, with over 5,000 rentals recorded. Moreover, events like β€˜Morning Yellow’ had a total of 51 sessions last year, attracting 1,151 participants from 74 countries. This year, the foundation plans to hold 'Seoul Hiking Week' twice, featuring scenic walks through Seoul's mountains adorned with spring flowers and autumn leaves.

In addition to the hiking initiatives, Korail Tourism Development is recruiting the third group of 'Rail Dreamers,' who will guide railway travel. This group is essential for ensuring the success of rail travel packages offered by Korail. Since the launch of the first group in 2023, 40 travel professionals have been nurtured. The current recruitment will include guides dedicated to local (Busan) and inbound (foreign tourists) travel, with 20 positions available, prioritizing those with travel-related qualifications or experience in the tourism sector. Applications are open until February 6.
