BH Metro: Novo Eldorado Station Inaugurated; Last Expansion Was in 2002

The Novo Eldorado station, the 20th station of the Belo Horizonte metro, has been inaugurated after more than 20 years without expansion, aiming to improve regional mobility.

The Novo Eldorado station was inaugurated on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the Belo Horizonte Metro system, which had seen no expansions in over two decades. The new station, located in Contagem, a suburb of Belo Horizonte, is expected to accommodate around 7,000 passengers daily and lengthens Line 1 by 1.7 kilometers to a total of approximately 29.8 kilometers, thereby enhancing connectivity between the Novo Eldorado neighborhood and the northern region of the capital.

This expansion is part of a contractual agreement made in March 2023 that stipulates further improvements to the metro system, reflecting a commitment to enhance urban mobility in the metropolitan area. The mayor of Contagem, Marília Campos, expressed a positive outlook regarding the new station, emphasizing its importance for improving transport efficiency within the greater Belo Horizonte area. The inauguration of the Novo Eldorado station signifies a pivotal step toward upgrading public transportation infrastructure that has been lagging since 2002.

Plans are already in place for additional expansion, with the proposal to add two more stations, Parque São João and Beatriz, also located in Contagem. Such developments not only aim to ease current transit challenges but also have the potential to stimulate economic growth and improve overall quality of life for residents in the area, reinforcing the necessity of public transport enhancements in urban planning and development efforts.
